Innovation is now a „must” for survival, not just optional.
With the new economy emerging, as well as the job automation and the rapid changes we are going through as a species, the ability to withstand change and even produce it voluntarity is one of the most essential skills one can have.
However, it is not just about inspiring innovation in an individual’s life – the communities we live in and the companies we work for are also subject to these social and economical changes.
There are many simple ways through which innovation can be inspired in a company – but there is an even simpler one which can yield incredible results if done properly.
Before I tell you about this strategy, let us explore a bit the concept of a company. First, what is a company actually?
A company is an entity which makes a product and sells it for a profit – right? But the company (the entity itself) is made out of people – so the people who work for the company are what gives this company its very life.
That is why corporate culture is a reflection of the people working in that corporation – and the opposite is true as well. To a certain extent, the corporate culture will also influence the individuals.
Think about it like this – the people in a company are the cells and the company itself is an organ. They are inseparable – the cells are what makes the organ and the organ is what dictates how cells behave.
As much as we would like to think that it is the companies who should change, just by reading the above paragraphs you will grasp the simple truth – the companies are made of people. Therefore, if we want a different company (or a different company culture), we need to change the people.
Here we come to the main idea – what is the simplest way to promote innovation in a company? By changing the people who work in it.
Now obviously I am not suggesting that everyone should get fired, except the CEO and the cleaning lady. What I am saying is that an influx of new, open-minded and innovating individuals is essential to the life of the company. Also, constantly encouraging the current employees to change the way they work and think is another efficient strategy as well.
The rhythm and pace at which this should be accomplished is also a critical aspect to consider. If the company brings in too many new people – or too fast – then the previous values and structure of the company may be shaken too vigorously.
On the other hand, if the company is lacking flexibility and rarely brings in new people (or it brings in new people who are „programmable”, so to speak, to the current ways of the company) then innovation is stunned.
If you welcome new and hungry talent (people who truly want to make an impact and be useful) then this will have a major impact on the senior employees as well. Adaptation will be necessary for them also to integrate the new innovation brought into the company by the new talent – and that is the whole point of it, right?
Hiring new people is a means to expand, thrive and grow as a company – as is training the current employees to think and work in new ways.
Just hiring new people is not enough, obviously. You need to care for them, to facilitate an optimal growth environment for them to flourish and you need to balance their new ways of doing things to the goals and vision of the company. Making sure that everyone is alligned on the same page and working towards the same goals is critical for the success of the company.
People usually do not like change and they are usually reluctant to ideas coming from other individuals they don’t really know or trust. This can be especially true with immigrants – but then again, a person who is willing to move from their native homeland and work in a new company is definitely resourceful and courageous enough to foster innovation.
If innovation is the goal of your company, one of the simplest ways to do this is by hiring new people who are competent, hungry for change and resourceful. This will also inspire the other employees of the company because the corporate culture will have changed the moment new people participate in it.
