Technical interviews are pseudo! I recently met a darn good technical friend over drinks and he was inflamed as to how ridiculous it is to go through technical interviews and tests. When asked about doing a 2 hour ‘on-the-spot’ technical test by an employer, he just chuckled and said, “why not just look at my github and my gists”. The employer neglected the remark and explained that the test is imperative for getting shortlisted. You guessed it absolutely right, if you thought my friend walked out of the interview! What a loss for the company- the guy was a ‘ruby’!
A handful of developers think tech interviews are cool, some just put up with them, but majority of them think they’re the worst thing to happen to programming since <insert most hated programming language here>. Developers’ hate being interviewed- says most of my developer friends! They detest the coding on the whiteboard or on the spot, the artificial questions and judgment they undergo. Just imagine, what if a technical person went for 5-7 interviews and was asked to do 5-7 different technical tests? To spice things up, what if he was a professional, working in a company? It just doesn’t make sense! Good candidates will be driven away.
Oh yeah! By the way, what if there were 2 rounds of technical tests! The image below is the closest representation of what my reaction would have been!
It might be the case where technical interviews do not suck, but the process of interviewing does. If employers have had bad experiences filtering talents or made some poor hiring choices- they are bound to test your mettle. There’s no escaping mates!
While technical interviewing is not perfect, I do believe the idea is good is useful for employers as it allows them to see a talent’s problem solving skills! But, the process has a huge gap to fill and the ‘ctrl+s’ solution is the simple idea of a universal test.
How efficient and effective would it be, if a RoR developer instead of doing 5 projects or tests to impress 5 hiring managers- just did 1 test that was acceptable by the respective hiring firms? Swoosh- problem solved! It saves time, makes hiring really fast and employers do not lose out on filtering the befitting candidates. What do you think? Do you have a better idea?
